Assessment Process

1. Round One Internet Shortlisting

All entries submitted to the Australian International Design Awards undergo First Round Internet Shortlisting. More than 600 design practitioners from around the world are invited to log onto the Australian International Design Awards website as a judge and vote for entries to proceed to the next stage. Judges are asked to exercise their professional opinion as to whether an entry has sufficient merit to undergo further assessment. The result is an accurate industry ranking of the entries from which the First Round Shortlist is obtained.

Entries that receive 50% or more YES votes automatically proceed to the next stage. Entries that receive 30 - 49% YES votes are given a second review by a smaller panel of judges, and may or may not make the shortlist. Entries that receive 0 - 29% YES votes do not progress further in the competition. Applicants are notified of the results shortly after this stage is completed. Where available and on request, optional judges' comments are provided to applicants as feedback to pursue product improvement opportunities.

To register to become a first round judge, contact us to see if you qualify.

2. Final Round Assessment

All shortlisted applicants are required to submit two final production samples and support material to complete a physical assessment of their entry. This stage involves a dedicated multidisciplinary panel of local and international experts in industrial design, engineering design, software-electronics design, furniture and lighting design, architecture, graphic design, production, new technology and intellectual property. External expert advisors will be introduced should a product area require additional input.

No formal presentations are required by the applicant, however should the judges wish to direct questions to the applicant during assessment, a structured Q&A session will take place by conference call or email. All submission material is presented to the panel by the facilitators in a consistent, unbiased manner. Presentation slides are read out and product samples are set up on a central table for review, testing and dismantling if required.
