Product Manufacturer Product Description and Principal Function(s) Sculptural Street furniture designed for Bicycle storage.The bicycle rack has been designed for the securing of all types of bicycle. The rack is produced with many environmental considerations, requires minimal maintenance and is durable enough to withstand vandalism and the demands of use. The external form is extremely relevant to the design and use of the product. The bicycle racks are sand cast DA601 recycled aluminium. Casting in metal allows a strong and smooth sculpted form to be created, a form that would be hard to otherwise fabricate. Aluminium was chosen because it is easily and cheaply available and readily recycled. Casting allows the product to be easily mass produced. It is easy to finish and the machining time is minimised. Cast aluminium is durable and requires no protective finishes. Durability means a long life span, an ability to withstand vandalism and minimal maintenance. The form allows the locking of bikes via their frames. The smooth form prevents damage to the bike, the rider and the public. The size (1200x300x50mm) makes efficient use of the footpath space and materials used. The smooth form was inspired by native flora. The compact sculptural design and materials used allow the racks to complement heritage precincts and modern architecture. Other bicycle racks are not made of recycled materials, not as durable, require maintenance, don’t allow complete locking of bike, use to much space and look out of place. A smooth organic form without protrusions creates no danger to bicycles, cyclists or pedestrians. The strong, gusseted design is able to withstand heavy abuse without breaking. This feature means that the safe form of the design will not be compromised by vandalism. The bicycle racks start their life as car scrap and other waste aluminium. We reuse the metal, known as DA601 grade aluminium and cast them into their current form. They are recycled and totally recyclable, giving them a potentially infinite life span. Durability allows long life, any damage that may occur can be easily fixed using equipment cheaply and readily available.
