Product Manufacturer Product Description and Principal Function(s) The VESDA LaserFOCUS Aspirating Smoke Detector is truly a revolutionary product for its industry.Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) offers the earliest possible warning of a potential fire. It works by continually drawing air from a room into a pipe network, filtering the air, then directing the air into a laser chamber for detection of smoke particles. This product is so sensitive, it can detect the presence of minute smoke particles, for example, caused by an overheating electrical wire. With this amount of warning, the threat of a fire can be addressed long before thick smoke, or flame appears. The VESDA LaserFOCUS™ is the most advanced air sampling smoke detection technology for small environments such as server rooms and small telecommunication facilities.. Incorporating first-in-industry Ultrasonic Airflow Sensing, the LaserFOCUS provides flow measurement that is immune to temperature and pressure changes. It is also immune to high levels of contamination, allowing it to be installed in environments that have high levels of dust, pollution or unstable environmental conditions. Even more revolutionary is its innovative “Smoke Dial”, the user interface that provides easy recognition from distance of the detected smoke risk, allowing a constant and unambiguous reading of a fire threat. To gain greater acceptance of ASD in the market the LaserFOCUS smoke detector was designed with an “out-of-the-box” concept to make installation and commissioning quick and easy. Key Product Features and Benefits The VESDA LaserFOCUS™ is a small area Aspirating Smoke Detector (ASD). It allows the benefits of reliable Early Warning Smoke Detection to be applied to small critical areas, for example, such as server rooms and mobile telecommunication huts. Previously, this superior detection technology was ruled out by perceived high costs and/or environmental conditions. The VESDA LaserFOCUS™ smoke detector incorporates a number of important, innovative features but most importantly the product provides the Fire Safety Community with a new, smaller weapon in the fight against business interruption caused by fire. The LaserFOCUS detector not only incorporates many “Design for Manufacture” features to optimise production costs and all the features critical to the success of ASD technology, but also introduces several innovations that are undeniable firsts in the field of ASD. The two most striking are: (a) a revolutionary new display, and (b) improved flow monitoring technology, using ultrasonics. Revolutionary New Display All user interfaces on the LaserFOCUS are designed for immediate understanding of the detectors status and ease of use. The “Smoke Dial” provides easy recognition from distance of the detected smoke risk, allowing a constant and unambiguous reading of a fire threat. In conjunction with the 4 alarm thresholds (a feature of high end ASD systems) local occupants can be “Alerted” to the fact that normal conditions have been exceeded and, if nothing is done, “Action” can be summoned from the persons responsible (security, warden etc) - all before a “Fire” alarm is signaled! This gives time to respond and avoid disruptive evacuation procedures. In many applications, this early warning prevents significant business interruption and damage to capital equipment. Out of Box Design Automated set up features on the LaserFOCUS enable faster and more reliable commissioning, without the need to connect a PC. Concealed switches invoke 14 day learning algorithms to set the most optimum alarm and fault levels for monitored smoke and airflow levels. Maintenance is also made easy with the LaserFOCUS. Instant Fault Finder™ provides quick identification of any faults by converting the smoke dial into a simple diagnostics tool. Where additional information is required to investigate faults, the VESDA LaserFOCUS supports an event log that can be accessed using intuitive PC software. Months of alarm, fault, smoke, flow and user interaction data is stored in each and every detector, providing unambiguous information for investigation teams. Ultrasonic Flow Monitoring Aspirating Smoke Detectors rely on airflow to carry air samples to the central detector. Any reduction in this ability would have serious consequences for detector performance, and has restricted the use of ASD in some areas of high dust contamination or unstable environmental conditions. The LaserFOCUS detector has an ultrasonic flow monitoring system incorporated to overcome this concern. This is the truly innovative feature of the VESDA LaserFOCUS setting a new benchmark in the industry. While ultrasonics has been an established technique in the process industry for measuring the velocity of fluids in pipelines it has not been used in ASD detectors, which exhibit much smaller flows, due to the cost of off the shelf solutions. The LaserFOCUS detector is the first to use Ultrasonic Flow Sensing principles to assist in the measurement & monitoring of airflow. The detector immediately identifies and communicates any troublesome variances in the airflow rate. The principle is based on two transducer receiver pairs sending out ultrasonic pulses alternately and the difference in the time taken for the signal to travel between them is a direct measure of the air velocity in the pipe. Importantly, the transducers cancel out any contamination effects from temperature, humidity or other environmental factors (eg dust). |
